The New Swing
Renaissance... embraced by the hippest of the hip.
The new swing
movement has resurrected zoot suits, vinyl records, pre-WWII automobiles,
partner dancing, art deco furniture, Sinatra, Las Vegas, wingtips,
and the ultra-wide tie.
The '40s brought
war time. People were very patriotic. The Big-Band era had arrived
and it was exciting. Big bands included Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman,
Tommy Dorsey, and Harry James. In Hollywood, the Palladium was packed
and considered the place to go dancing.
Slang expressions
from the '40s were "A-OK", "copasthetic", "super",
and "in the groove". The famous actors were Irene Dunn
and Robert Taylor. The dance of the '40s, which evolved from the
Lindy Hop of the '30s, was the Jitterbug.
In the late '40s,
West Coast Swing originated in Hollywood. The director and choreographer
wanted to fit more dancers on the floor facing the camera, so the
West Coast Swing was born and danced in a straight line or a slot.
Since the early
'90s, partner dancing is making a comeback. Country Two-Step, Waltz,
West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, Lindy, Hustle, Salsa, and more.
People are dancing to all types of music which makes all forms of
couples dancing popular.
No matter what
your taste in music, there is a particular dance that fits your
favorite tunes! Everyone is doing it. Young and old. Single and
married.
The Bug Zappers
band consists of a standard rhythm section, a horn section and a
male vocalist/emcee. The costuming is totally '40s.
